The Flying Scotsman Pub

Is located at a side street to Avenyn. Walking on Avenyn you'll soon see that most of the places are located along one block, between heavily trafficked streets and a tram stop named Valand.
So, you're facing Poseidon, the naked guy with a big fish in his hand, at a distance. To your absolute right is a place called Bryggeriet. Turn to that place, follow it to the corner and head down that street for all of ten metres. You'll have the pub to your absolute left.
If you arrive by tram then you leave at the Valand stop. Walk one block away from Poseidon and turn left. (Just another way of describing exactly the same as I did above.)

Venue main entrance

Below is a photo of the main entrance to Chalmers University of Technology where this years EC will be held. Just walk through, keep the building to your right for another fifty or so metres and you'll have the restaurant entrance to your right. That's where we'll be.

Just remember that buses replace the trams as they're doing maintenance work on the tram tracks passing by the venue. If walking makes you feel better it's a fifteen minutes leisure walk from the city centre.

Organizer's seminar

There seems to have been a glitch in local communications over here. Contrary to the schedule the seminar is NOT cancelled. I'm stating this here in case the schedule isn't changed in time.

Saturday and Sunday

And by that I mean the weekend AFTER the EC weekend. Those tournaments will be held in Changemaker's office, Järntorget three.

The main building in the picture is where the office is located. We'll have runners making sure no one is stuck at the entrance, but should you arrive late it is button number three for calling our attention.

Head over to the official site for some updates on public transports and prices.

Liseberg

The photos below are all from the amusement park that we will visit during the V:TES in the Sun week.

In difference from several large amusement parks placed far outside city centres Liseberg is, as more or less all other major attractions in Gothenburg, situated a short walk from the dead centre of the city.

First a shot out of the park. Gothia Hotel should work as a reference point if you are searching for Liseberg.

People tend to flock here even when weather isn't at its best.

The wooden roller coaster is named Balder.

Some prefer their rides in metal though.

Flume Ride is a classic for Liseberg.

There are the normal upside down rides.

And the more down to earth variants.

Below the hill with the largest roller coaster most of the restaurants and bars are located in faux old Gothenburg buildings.

Fish

Those of you who plan to stay the entire week. Just a reminder: don't order fish Sunday and Monday. Fish should be fresh, and fishermen have weekends just like the rest of us.

On flying

Those of you arriving here by flight will either grab a taxi or an airport coach and get your body, your luggage and your cards to whatever accommodation you have. No problem.

When you leave, however, you have to be aware that Gothenburg has two airports. There is Göteborg-Landvetter Airport as well as Göteborg City Airport. Make sure you know which one you're using.

See you in three weeks.

Update on the welcome party

Below directly cited from the USENET News group:

EC 2007 Announces:

Welcoming Party!

Where: "Kalle Glader" party venue (will be marked on a map on the EC website)
When: Thursday August 2. From 18:00-02:00 (yes, the organisers needa to sleep from time to time)
Cost: 60 SEK, paid at the door
Pre-registration: Send an e-mail to aek[at]student[dot]chalmers[dot]se and you will have the organisers eternal respect (happy organisers means less DQ's)
What do you get: Access to the venue (which sadly costs us alot), 1 booster for our awesome Duffin Draft tournament that will take place at the party, and hopefully some Gothenburg playgroup sponsored snacks and non-alcoholic drinks (i.e softdrinks etc)
What do you bring: Anything edible, drinkable and vtes cards for casual games
What are you allowed to do: Play vtes, do some drinking, have some fun, meet the players in attendance
What are you not allowed to do: Being too drunk and obnoxious, smoke inside the location, not listen to the organisers when they tell you to do or not do something, annoy me when I finally get off work and not having fun

Recommended food to bring: Anything that is easy to share, doesn't require cooking and doesn't make a mess I have to clean up at 2 am.
Recommended drink to bring: Anything alcoholic (other stuff is also allowed to ofcourse :)). I recommend bringing hard liquor from whatever country you come from (only norway beats sweden in prices of hard liquor). Beer and wine are ok priced and can be bought at Systembolaget, the Swedish liquor store. A map of where the closest Systembolaget to the party will be on the EC site shortly.

Closest tram stop: Kapellplatsen (will also be marked on a map on the EC website). EC organisers will meet up here every half an hour from 18 till 23 and help you get to the location of the party. If you arrive later than 23 e-mail me for my phone number.

Other info (including info on the Duffin draft tourney) will be added to the website once I've had some time to be creative and come up with other fun stuff.

Selfserving news

Well, I write the blog, so I guess I have the right to be partial when I chose pieces of news.

After a one year hiatus I finally got around to writing a new Toreador newsletter. Head over to the newsgroup (that would be Google Groups and rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad for those of you who only use a web browser) if you have an interest in it.

Edit: Seems my USENET News provider has a very slow server. If the post isn't visible by tomorrow I'll repost it through other means.

New 7/7/7 rules

A Rules Team Ruling has been announced today. They take effect seventh of August which means that they are NOT valid for the EC.
The Thursday and later tournaments during the V:TES in the Sun week are affected though.

Below the announcement as written by LSJ:

ERRATA

Putrefaction: replace "He or she may burn this card instead of untapping" with "He or she does not untap as normal. Burn this card during untap phase."

RULINGS

Cards allies play as vampires treat them as vampires for duration effects (but not effects from the card-in-play).

All cost-affecting cards operate no matter how the card is played ("as normal" or otherwise). All multiplication and division is handled first, followed by addition and subtraction.
Note that pay nothing still means pay nothing, even if something else would add to the cost. So costs for cards canceled by Sudden Reversal or Direct Intervention are still not paid, for example. And Bauble and Horrid Reality still gets weapons for free. And similar for Helena and Dragos.

Similarly, cards that can be used to pay some of the cost of other cards can be used whenever such a cost is being paid (regardless of whether the card is played "as normal" or not).

The card on Echo of Harmonies is not in play, even though it is face up. (This would be interesting only if the card was unique (none so far) or if it is a Boon and Blood Trade is in play).

Rötschreck can be played on a vampire who is immune to Frenzy cards (uselessly, since the target is immune to it).

Updates on the EC site

Head over to the official website and check them out. And, btw, if you haven't preregistered, do so now.

Lindholmen - Lilla Bommen

And we're heading back across the river to the city centre.

A few items from the ship building era are still left and operational.

Even though the presence of the harbour is long gone from the southern shore it still shows that this was once part of the industry.

A shot upstream. You can see how the weather changes as soon as it reaches the hills.

Close to Järntoret. Clear skies above the sea.

The maritime museum. All ships are open for visitors.

Gothenburg opera house with its restaurant.

The barque Viking with offices and Göta Älvbron in the background. The permanently anchored ship holds a restaurant with a personal memory for me -- we held our wedding party there.

The centre most guest harbour in the city. Östra Nordstan's parking house in the background. Östra Nordstan is a large shopping centre under one roof. Just about as ugly as it is practical.

We're making landfall at Lilla Bommen. The red building ahead holds a touristy rstaurant and a ticket office for boat trips to the archipelago. These boat trips are not part of the public transport system but rather thematic experiences with or without food included in the fare.
Don't despair. A large number of ferries transport peope to and from the islands, and those ferries are definitely part of the public transports of Gothenburg, with prices documented earlier here on this blog.

Klippan - Norra Älvstranden

We're leaving Klippan behind us and take the ferry across the river to continue the tour on Norra Älvstranden.

Leaving Klippan and Novotel behind.

And Eriksberg is ahead of us. The last ten years have seen the contruction of homes for literally tens of thousands of people where there used to be run down disused storage areas from an era when the central city still held the harbour.

In a way the best with the northern side is the view of the southern, where the city center is located. Taking the ferry from Klippan all the way to it's terminal stop without stepping off for a walk will give you most the views.

Some of the new homes come with private boating places.

Some of the last centrally paced remnants of the traditional architecture for the western coast of Sweden. This style is still quite common the farther out and north you get.

The river still carries some heavy traffic including large ships.

Amerikaskjulet, the last building in Sweden for hundreds of thousands leaving for America late 19th and early 20th century. The shot is across the river.

The Paddan boats is the epithome of touristic way to see Gothenburg. I can recommend it. Behind lies one of the Stena ferries destined for Denmark, and in the background you can see Skansen Kronan perched upon a hilltop.

Klippan

After turning right, across the the highway and keep that ferry terminal to your right, you'll arrive at Klippan. It's kind of a live museum.

Sorry, I don't really know what the monument represents.

In the shades Gothenburg's possibly finest restaurant. Sjömagasinet serves seafood almost exclusively, and exclusively is a word that goes well together with the restaurant.

And we're at the river.

Novotel, the hotel, to the left.

A place like this is bound to have a small marina.

River meets sea. The black square to the left in the picture is a hangout I can truly recommend for sunny summer's days.

And one shot from that place.

Järntorget - Majorna

Gothenburg is a city at the water. I'll be taking you from Järntorget towards the sea. This part of the tour without seeing any water though.

Leaving Järntorget behind us. Shot taken more or less over my shoulder.

Another of the numerous trams criss-crossing the city. We're headed past Masthugget and aiming for Majorna.

Hängmattan is the popular nickname of the most well known patch of street in Majorna.

A bell tower conveniently lying within photo distance from the street.

And we're getting close to Klippan, which is from where I'll run the next session.
