Liseberg

The photos below are all from the amusement park that we will visit during the V:TES in the Sun week.

In difference from several large amusement parks placed far outside city centres Liseberg is, as more or less all other major attractions in Gothenburg, situated a short walk from the dead centre of the city.



First a shot out of the park. Gothia Hotel should work as a reference point if you are searching for Liseberg.



People tend to flock here even when weather isn't at its best.



The wooden roller coaster is named Balder.



Some prefer their rides in metal though.



Flume Ride is a classic for Liseberg.



There are the normal upside down rides.



And the more down to earth variants.



Below the hill with the largest roller coaster most of the restaurants and bars are located in faux old Gothenburg buildings.

Lindholmen - Lilla Bommen

And we're heading back across the river to the city centre.



A few items from the ship building era are still left and operational.



Even though the presence of the harbour is long gone from the southern shore it still shows that this was once part of the industry.

The centre most guest harbour in the city. Östra Nordstan's parking house in the background. Östra Nordstan is a large shopping centre under one roof. Just about as ugly as it is practical.



We're making landfall at Lilla Bommen. The red building ahead holds a touristy rstaurant and a ticket office for boat trips to the archipelago. These boat trips are not part of the public transport system but rather thematic experiences with or without food included in the fare.
Don't despair. A large number of ferries transport peope to and from the islands, and those ferries are definitely part of the public transports of Gothenburg, with prices documented earlier here on this blog.

Klippan - Norra Älvstranden

We're leaving Klippan behind us and take the ferry across the river to continue the tour on Norra Älvstranden.

And Eriksberg is ahead of us. The last ten years have seen the contruction of homes for literally tens of thousands of people where there used to be run down disused storage areas from an era when the central city still held the harbour.



In a way the best with the northern side is the view of the southern, where the city center is located. Taking the ferry from Klippan all the way to it's terminal stop without stepping off for a walk will give you most the views.



Some of the new homes come with private boating places.



Some of the last centrally paced remnants of the traditional architecture for the western coast of Sweden. This style is still quite common the farther out and north you get.



The river still carries some heavy traffic including large ships.



Amerikaskjulet, the last building in Sweden for hundreds of thousands leaving for America late 19th and early 20th century. The shot is across the river.



The Paddan boats is the epithome of touristic way to see Gothenburg. I can recommend it. Behind lies one of the Stena ferries destined for Denmark, and in the background you can see Skansen Kronan perched upon a hilltop.

Klippan

After turning right, across the the highway and keep that ferry terminal to your right, you'll arrive at Klippan. It's kind of a live museum.



Sorry, I don't really know what the monument represents.



In the shades Gothenburg's possibly finest restaurant. Sjömagasinet serves seafood almost exclusively, and exclusively is a word that goes well together with the restaurant.



And we're at the river.



Novotel, the hotel, to the left.



A place like this is bound to have a small marina.



River meets sea. The black square to the left in the picture is a hangout I can truly recommend for sunny summer's days.

Järntorget - Majorna

Gothenburg is a city at the water. I'll be taking you from Järntorget towards the sea. This part of the tour without seeing any water though.

Another of the numerous trams criss-crossing the city. We're headed past Masthugget and aiming for Majorna.



Hängmattan is the popular nickname of the most well known patch of street in Majorna.



A bell tower conveniently lying within photo distance from the street.



And we're getting close to Klippan, which is from where I'll run the next session.

Vasagatan

Vasagatan connects Haga with Avenyn. Vasagatan is the main street in Vasastan, the stone city in the city. The area is liberally sprinkled with restaurants, pubs and cafes all the way between Haga and Vasaplatsen. Between Vasaplatsen and Avenyn the number of waterholes on Vasagatan itself decreases somewhat, possibly because the competition from the surrounding area is too strong.

The center of the street is dominated by trees. Only bicycles and pedesatrians are welcome here.

The two first shots I turned and took, so I'm moving away from the direction of the shots.



There are a number of restaurants and cafes lining the street, mostly to one side of it.



Getting closer to Avenyn.

Haga

Where Linnegatan ends at Järntorget it is only a block to walk before you enter Haga. It is a wooden town in the city, spared the demolitions teams when all too much of the old buildings were torn down during the sixties to give place to constructions in concrete and steel.

Today Haga has become a place for the well to do as well as a tourist trap for visitors and locals alike. In all honesty there is only one street for strolling around. The rest is almost purely residential areas.

That street joins Linnegatan and Vasastaden.

This is mostly a place for the day. Late evenings it is quiet here.



I'm walking from Hagaparken in the direction of Linnegatan. The shot is along the main street.

Even though it is all cobblestones and pedestrians cars are allowed to drive here, but mostly you'll be surrounded by people lazily walking or sitting at one of the cafes and restaurants.



One side street leads up to an old fortification. Skansen Kronan was basically a fortified gun emplacement overlooking the river and the killing zones between the fortification and the city walls.

Järntorget - Kungsgatan

I'll continue with my walkabout in Gothenburg. Linnegatan stretches between Slottsskogen and Järntorget. From there it's a nice walk to Kungsgatan.



The square is split into two main sections. One large tram stop and one area for pedestrians. A fountain sits in the divide.



Say hello to Bea. I believe quite a few of you have already met her.



After crossing the tram tracks it's a short walk along a street leading to the canal.



The canal used to be part of the city fortifications earlier, but the walls were almost all torn down a long time ago.
In the left corner a fish market hides, looking a bit like a church. It's named Feskekörka (fish church) for that reason.



And we're climbing up one end of Kungsgatan. The photo is shot in the direction of Järntorget.

Logotype

This is probably the most common photo possible from Gothenburg. There is a reason we chose it, albeit from a slightly different angle, as the logotype for the Gothenburg European Championships in V:TES.
